Devonte Wilson wants to be a police detective one day, and he has a plan for getting there. Recently, Wilson received an award from the Boys and Girls Club of Northeast Florida that gives him a good start.

Last week, the Boys and Girls Club of Northeast Florida awarded the annual Youth of the Year scholarship to Devonte Wilson, a member of the Beaches Boys and Girls Club. Wilson, a junior at Fletcher High School, said he was shocked to find out he won.

On Feb. 25, the Boys & Girls Club will announce its annual Youth of the Year competition winner. This year’s four nominees will represent Springfield, St. Augustine, Jacksonville Beach and the Westside. I sat with Antwon Smith, the Springfield nominee, and chatted for a bit.

In the annual Youth of the Year competition, young people contend based on academic merit, obstacles to overcome, and service to their Boys & Girls Clubs and their communities. Each local winner receives a $1,000 scholarship and vies to advance to the state level.
