Boys & Girls Clubs' Core Programs
The Club provides national, evidence-based, diversified activities that meet the interests of all young people. Core programs encourage activities with adults, peers, and family members that enable kids to enhance self-esteem and fulfill their potential. Based on the physical, emotional, cultural, and social needs and interests of boys and girls, and recognizing developmental principles, the Club offers diversified program activities in five areas:
1. Character & Leadership Development
Helping youth become responsible, caring citizens and acquire skills for participating in the democratic process is the main thrust of these programs. They also develop leadership skills and provide opportunities for planning, decision-making, contributing to the Club and community and celebrating our national heritage.
2. Academic Achievement
BGCA has implemented the programmatic strategy Every Member, Every Year, designed so that all Clubs, no matter their size or resources, can partner with youth, parents, schools and other community stakeholders to implement at least one of three approaches: academic enrichment and school engagement; targeted dropout prevention; and intensive intervention and case management. Our aim is to ensure that all Club members graduate from high school on time, ready for a post-secondary education and a 21st-century career.
Project Learn reinforces the academic enrichment and school engagement of young people during the time they spend at the Club.
3. Health & Life Skills
These initiatives develop young people's capacity to engage in positive behaviors that nurture their own well-being, set personal goals and live successfully as self-sufficient adults. A popular program in this area is:
The SMART Moves (Skills Mastery and Resistance Training) Prevention/education program addresses problems such as drug and alcohol use and premature sexual activity.
4. The Arts
Programs in this core area enable youth to develop their creativity and cultural awareness through knowledge and appreciation of the visual arts, crafts, performing arts, and creative writing. One such program is:
National Fine Arts Exhibit
This year-round program encourages artisitc expression among Club members 5 to 18 through drawing, painting, printmaking, collage, mixed media, and sculpture displayed at local and regional exhibits.
5. Sports, Fitness, & Recreation
These Club programs help develop fitness, a positive use of leisure time, reduction of stress, appreciation for the environment, and social and interpersonal skills. This core area includes:
Triple Play, a comprehensive health and wellness program, strives to improve the overall health of Club members ages 5-18 by increasing their daily physical activity, teaching them good nutrition, and helping them develop healthy relationships.
